Tripoli was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea. Tripoli is the largest city, the principal sea port, and the largest commercial and manufacturing center in Libya. It is also the site of Al-Fateh University. Due to the city's long history, there are many sites of archaeological significance in Tripoli. The climate is typical Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, cool winters and some modest rainfall. The city's old town is still unspoiled by mass-tourism, though it is increasingly being exposed to more and more visitors from abroad, following the lifting of the UN embargo in 2003. However, the walled Medina retains much of its serene old-world ambiance. The Assaraya al-Hamra (the Red Castle), a vast palace complex with numerous courtyards, dominates the city skyline and is located on the outskirts of the Medina. There are some classical statues and fountains from the Ottoman period scattered around the castle. The Gurgi and Karamanli mosques, with their intricate decorations and tilework, are examples of the artistic skills of local craftsmen. Just outside the Gurgi mosque is the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, the only surviving Roman monument in the city. More and more palaces (especially from the Karamanli period) are also being restored and opened to the public. The basic street plan of the medina was laid down in the Roman period when the walls were constructed as protection against attacks from the interior of Tripolitania, and are considered well planned, possibly better than modern street plans. In the 8th century a wall on the sea-facing side of the city was added. Three gates provided access to the old town: Bab Zanata in the west, Bab Hawara in the southeast and Bab Al-Bahr in the north wall. The city walls are still standing and can be climbed for good views of the city. The Bazaar is also known for its traditional ware; fine jewelery and clothes can be found in the local markets.

Is Tripoli safe enough to visit as a tourist? In my opinion, YES. Still you might want to check with locals before visiting. Not to be confused with Tripoli - the capital of Libya, Tripoli or Trablous (the arabic name of the city) is Lebanon's second largest city after Beirut and the capital of the North Governorate. The city overlooks the eastern Mediterranean Sea and there is a string of uninhabited islands just off the coast of Tripoli. These are particularly nice to visit in the summer time, I was told. The citadel of Raymond de Saint-Gilles is located on a hilltop overlooking the city. The citadel of Tripoli was built by Raymon De Saint-Gilles, governor of Tripoli, in 1103 on the emplacement of the castle of Saint-Gilles.When the Mont Pèlerin quarter was set ablaze by the Mamluks in 1289, the castle of Saint-Gilles suffered from the holocaust and stood abandoned on the hilltop for the next eighteen years. If you are visiting Tripoli, you should definitely plan a visit to Abdul Rahman Hallab & Sons in the city center. It is a luxurious pastry shop and restaurant, established in 1881 and famous for its oriental confectionaries.

Around seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is still an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. Tripoli, along with the historic towns of the former Tripolitania, is one of the most spectacular places of ancient culture in North Africa and the heritage of an advanced civilisation located on the edge of the Sahara.

The Tripoli Grand Prix was a motor racing event first held in 1925 on a racing circuit outside Tripoli, the capital of what was then Italian Tripolitania. Motor racing was an extremely popular sport in Italy and the colony was seeking methods to raise capital and promote tourism -- tourists who, it was hoped, would then decide to settle in Tripolitania. But despite the support of the colony's extremely enthusiastic governor, Emilio de Bono, and some initial success, the events failed financially. Only personal intervention by de Bono kept the 1929 event from being cancelled, and 1930 was marred by a spartan field, little public interest, and the death of Gastone Brilli-Peri in an accident[1]. Initial enthusiasm and sponsorship had retreated, the fallout from Brilli-Peri's accident meant a 1931 running was impossible, and the dream of a successful Tripoli Grand Prix might have ended there and then. But the president of Tripoli's auto club, Edigio Sforzini, was resilient. He decided to organize another Grand Prix, this time on a purpose built European style racing circuit. Sufficient capital was raised from the Italian government's funding of a fair promoting the colony so as to make the venture possible, and upon the circuit's completion the Grand Prix was scheduled for the spring of 1933.[1] This new Mellaha Lake track was a 13.140 kilometer (8.165 mi) long affair situated in a salt basin between Tripoli, Suq al Jum'ah (also known as Suk el Giuma or Sugh el Giumaa (سوق الجمعة)) and Tajura. The track's most distinctive landmark was a brilliant white concrete tower situated across from a large frontstretch grandstand that could hold up to ten thousand people[2]. Mellaha Lake was equipped with starting lights and a photo-electric timing system[1], both innovations, and the additional amenities rivaled the best that continental European circuits had to offer. With Italy exerting further control over its North African holdings, including the appointment of Italo Balbo as Governor-General and the joining of Italian Cyrenaica and Italian Tripolitania into a single colony, Libya, the event gained even more spectacle. The participants were treated like royalty, staying in luxury at the Hotel Uaddan with its casino and dinner theater and being entertained by Balbo at his palace. All this led Dick Seaman to describe Mellaha Lake as the "ascot of motor racing circuits"[2], and coupled with its substantial total prize, it is easy to see why the Tripoli Grand Prix became such a popular date on the calendar. From 1933 to 1938, the Grand Prix was run to the Formula Libre standard, meaning that no weight or engine restrictions were enforced on what was then the fastest track in the world. By 1939, the Italians had tired of Germany's dominance and they turned it into a Voiturette race for smaller, 1500cc cars, but they were foiled when a specially-built Mercedes driven by Hermann Lang won[3]. In 1940, with only the factory Alfa Romeo and Maserati teams plus independents in attendance, Giuseppe Farina took his only major pre-war victory[4]. It was a phyrric and irrelevant result, and the Tripoli Grand Prix was never held again. By the CNN Wire Staff April 6, 2011 4:16 a.m. STORY HIGHLIGHTS - "AC360" reunites Eman al-Obeidy with her mother - Young woman says court employee threatened her - Her mother tells her to keep her faith - Al-Obeidy says she has tried to leave Libya, but authorities have thwarted her attempts (CNN) -- Eman al-Obeidy, the woman who claims forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi raped her, spoke Tuesday with her mother, who has come to her defense, for the first time since her ordeal began. Al-Obeidy told Aisha Ahmad that a court employee pulled a weapon on her when she went to a courthouse. Al-Obeidy, who burst into a Tripoli hotel last month to tell her harrowing story to journalists, told CNN's Anderson Cooper in an emotional phone interview that the administrative court employee threatened her life. "The people came and started pulling him," said al-Obeidy, who related the incident to her mother, also on the phone. "The whole day in the court they were saying we are going to kill this failure who reports on our brigades." A car took her home, al-Obeidy said. "They don't want me to go to the court at all." CNN could not independently verify the 29-year-old law school graduate's claims. Al-Obeidy, who is no longer in custody after authorities rushed her away from the hotel, said she still fears for her safety in Tripoli, which she called a "large prison." She told "AC360" that Gadhafi forces took her passport and would not let her cross the border into Tunisia. Her mother, Aisha Ahmad, who lives in the eastern coastal city of Tobruk, urged al-Obeidy to return to her parents "before they kill you." "You have Allah with you, you have Allah with you, you have Allah with you," Ahmad said. "Do not change your statement." Ahmad tried to comfort her distraught daughter, saying, "they lie in the Libyan media." "I dream of them trying to kill me," said al-Obeidy, who has spent time with her sister and is concerned about the health of her father back home. Ahmad told al-Obeidy the world is praying for her and not to be afraid. "I'm not afraid," the daughter replied. "The one thing that really bothers me is that I'm far from you. Nobody is standing by me here in Tripoli." Asked by Cooper if she were still trying to leave the capital, al-Obeidy said, "How can I possibly get out of Tripoli when Tripoli is under siege? There are only two ways to get to my family, by way of Tunisia or through the eastern zone and they're both under siege." Al-Obeidy, who was encouraged by Ahmad to pray and keep her faith, was grateful for the opportunity to speak with her family. "We'd like to thank the American people and every person who tried to make my voice heard," she said. In two previous telephone interviews with Cooper, al-Obeidy spoke about her alleged abuse. At times in tears, at other times defiant, she recalled men pouring alcohol into her eyes and repeatedly using rifles to sodomize her. Al-Obeidy said she spent 72 hours under interrogation after being dragged away from the Tripoli hotel where she tried to tell journalists about her alleged abuse. She has said the public statements from a state TV anchor and government officials, who initially called her mentally ill, drunk and a prostitute, have ruined her reputation. Al-Obeidy burst into the Rixos Hotel in Tripoli on March 26 while international journalists staying there were having breakfast. She told reporters she had been taken from a checkpoint east of Tripoli, held against her will for two days and beaten and raped by 15 men. When CNN saw her in March, al-Obeidy's legs and face were bruised and she had blood on her right inner thigh. Her visible injuries appeared to support her allegations, but CNN could not independently verify her story. CNN's "AC360" spoke with al-Obeidy Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Forces loyal to Libya's UN-backed unity government seized the headquarters of a rival militia on Wednesday in a third day of intense fighting for control of Tripoli. The capital has seen exchanges of rocket and artillery fire between unity government forces and a militia loyal to former prime minister Khalifa Ghweil. Libya has experienced years of violence and lawlessness since the NATO-backed ouster of longtime dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, with rival parliaments and governments vying for… READ MORE : http://www.africanews.com/2017/03/16/libya-s-government-troops-gain-ground-in-tripoli-as-fighting-escalates Africanews is a new pan-African media pioneering multilingual and independent news telling expertise in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Libya, the frontline of the fighting continues to be fragmented and constantly shifting. Despite this, the opposition is organising itself and making significant advances in the West. Al Jazeera's James Bays caught up with one rebel brigade of fighters who are readying themselves to enter the capital.
