This came after a group of Misrata militants calling themselves Fajr Libya seized the city’s main airport. The airport was in control of Zintan forces since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi. Earlier, forces loyal to renegade General Khalifa Haftar claimed responsibility for similar attacks on Tripoli. Meanwhile, Libyan parliament has declared Fajr Libya and Ansar al-Sharia militants as terrorists. Fajr Libya is a branch of Misrata militants who are fighting Zentan militias supported by Khalifa Haftar. Ansar al-Sharia is mostly located in Benghazi and has seized most of the army bases there.

Forces loyal to retired army general, Khalifa Haftar, have been carrying out an armed campaign against militants in Benghazi since Friday. Scores of people have been killed as a result. Modern Tripoli is undergoing constant development. Contemporary architecture is everywhere with skyscrapers that contain offices and apartments that have been built on the periphery of the city. Around seventy kilometres west of Tripoli and also located on the Mediterranean coast are the remains of the ancient trading town of Sabratha. Its Theatre has been rebuilt and is still an impressive structure that dates back to the second century A.D. Tripoli, along with the historic towns of the former Tripolitania, is one of the most spectacular places of ancient culture in North Africa and the heritage of an advanced civilisation located on the edge of the Sahara.

Tripoli (Arabic: طرابلس‎ Ṭarābulus)- also طرابلس الغرب Ṭarābulus al-Gharb Libyan vernacular: Ṭrābləs pronunciation; derived from "Τρίπολη"; the Greek word for "three cities" in Greek: Τρίπολις Tripolis) is the largest city and capital of Libya. The Tripoli metropolitan area (district area) has a population of 1,065,405 (2006 census). The city is located in the northwest of the country on the edge of the desert, on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean Sea and forming a bay. Tripoli was founded in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea. Tripoli is the largest city, the principal sea port, and the largest commercial and manufacturing center in Libya. It is also the site of Al-Fateh University. Due to the city's long history, there are many sites of archaeological significance in Tripoli. The climate is typical Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, cool winters and some modest rainfall. The city's old town is still unspoiled by mass-tourism, though it is increasingly being exposed to more and more visitors from abroad, following the lifting of the UN embargo in 2003. However, the walled Medina retains much of its serene old-world ambiance. The Assaraya al-Hamra (the Red Castle), a vast palace complex with numerous courtyards, dominates the city skyline and is located on the outskirts of the Medina. There are some classical statues and fountains from the Ottoman period scattered around the castle. The Gurgi and Karamanli mosques, with their intricate decorations and tilework, are examples of the artistic skills of local craftsmen. Just outside the Gurgi mosque is the Arch of Marcus Aurelius, the only surviving Roman monument in the city. More and more palaces (especially from the Karamanli period) are also being restored and opened to the public. The basic street plan of the medina was laid down in the Roman period when the walls were constructed as protection against attacks from the interior of Tripolitania, and are considered well planned, possibly better than modern street plans. In the 8th century a wall on the sea-facing side of the city was added. Three gates provided access to the old town: Bab Zanata in the west, Bab Hawara in the southeast and Bab Al-Bahr in the north wall. The city walls are still standing and can be climbed for good views of the city. The Bazaar is also known for its traditional ware; fine jewelery and clothes can be found in the local markets.

Woman in military uniform taking photos STORYLINE: Tripoli appeared calm on Tuesday night and residents were out shopping after breaking their fast for Ramadan, despite fighting between forces loyal to embattled Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and rebels continuing in other parts of the country. Footage filmed under strict supervision of the Libyan government showed traffic in Tripoli''s Green Square and people shopping. Fattah Abdullah, a resident in Tripoli, said that people were living life as normal. "We do not care about the NATO anymore, we are living as we were before, we live, we do shopping, we do everything, actually we do not care anymore," Abdullah said. Another resident, Ammar Ali, also said that the situation was "normal". "Despite of the continuous bombing of NATO every night, people are out on the streets, we cannot find the words to express how people are getting out on the streets to shop during Ramadan, the situation is normal," Ali said. Meanwhile, heavy fighting was taking place for control of the strategic city of Zawiya, just 30 miles (48 kilometres) west of Tripoli between opposition fighters and government forces loyal to Gadhafi, where the rebels were trying to cut supply routes between Tunisia and Tripoli. The routes are critical for moving food, fuel and weapons over land to the capital. With NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) imposing a no-fly zone over Libya for months and bombarding regime targets, the coastal road has become a lifeline between the capital and the outside world. The eastern half of the country is now firmly in rebel control, with a transitional leadership based in the de facto capital of Benghazi. The east''s main front line is at the strategic oil terminal of Brega, where trucks carrying rebel anti-Gadhafi forces entered on Tuesday. Brega has passed back and forth many times between rebel and regime control. Brega is nearly 500 miles (800 kilometres) west of Zawiya. In Libya, unidentified war planes have pounded some targets in the capital Tripoli. Tripoli citizens say they heard the sound fighter jets earlier on Sunday followed by blasts.

Various of demonstration STORYLINE Libya''s capital was growing increasingly tense on Wednesday, as rebel fighters closed in on the city from the west and the south. Rebel fighters came closer to seizing the strategic western city of Zawiya on Wednesday. A rebel victory in the city could be a turning point in the six-month-old war and leave Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi nearly cornered in Tripoli, just 50 kilometres (30 miles) to the east along the Mediterranean coast. NATO controls the seas to the north of Tripoli. The capital''s residents were trying to continue life as normal on Wednesday, but people complained of shortages of goods and fuel. Shop owner Ahmed Abdul said his shelves were well stocked at the moment, but he expects supplies to run out if the fighting along the coast continues. Abdul Walood al-Wali, who owns a bakery, said he was already "running out of everything". Dozens of opposition fighters surrounded Libya''s last functioning oil refinery on Wednesday and laid siege to about 100 government troops, part of a push which brought them closer to seizing the city of Zawiya. A rebel field commander in Zawiya said the clashes at the refinery shut down an oil pipeline to Tripoli, where a third of Libya''s 6 (m) million people live. Gadhafi''s regime is keen to show that it retains the support of residents, despite the hardships in Tripoli. Al-Wali proudly showed off his watch with a picture of Gadhafi on its face. One woman said she would never "abandon" Gadhafi. "He is a fantastic man. I am a divorced woman and I get a pension," she said. On Wednesday night, large numbers of people gathered in the city''s central square for a regular demonstration in support of Gadhafi. The Libyan rebels made a dramatic advance on Saturday out of their bases in the western mountains near Tunisia into Zawiya on the Mediterranean coast. Since then, they have taken control of 70 percent of the city, rebel commanders say, and have been slowly gaining ground in fierce battles with Gadhafi''s forces. In Libya's capital Tripoli, at least two people are killed in clashes between rival militant groups. Officials say the violence had no link to an offensive launched by a renegade army general in the eastern city of Benghazi. Forces loyal to retired army general, Khalifa Haftar, have been carrying out an armed campaign against militants in Benghazi since Friday. Scores of people have been killed as a result. Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni has accused general Haftar of staging a coup, and denounced his forces as outlaws. Haftar's group also stormed the parliament building in Tripoli on Sunday, and kidnapped some 20 lawmakers there. The parliament was suspended after the attack, which was condemned by the interim government. Meanwhile, clashes have broken out in Benghazi, with unknown attackers firing rockets at the city's airport.
